Malte Kluetz: Vancouver Christmas Market Founder
In 2010, Malte Kluetz, an entrepreneur from Hameln, Germany, became the Vancouver Christmas Market founder, introducing the charm of traditional German Christmas markets to Vancouver.
Motivated by fond memories and a desire to share cultural heritage, he launched the Vancouver Christmas Market at Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza. Over 100,000 visitors attended during the first season.
By 2016, the event moved to Jack Poole Plaza. It expanded to more than 90 artisan vendors and became a cornerstone of Vancouver’s holiday celebrations. Now entering its 15th season in 2025, the market features beloved highlights such as the walk-in Christmas tree, the Glühwein Pyramid, and the original Herrnhut Stars — all evoking the spirit of a true German Christkindlmarkt.
A Background Rooted in Hospitality and Experience
Before founding the market, Malte led Uniquely Northwest, a Destination Management Company (DMC) based in Seattle and Vancouver. Since 1992, he has designed creative incentive programs and corporate experiences for clients across the U.S. West Coast and Western Canada. This background built the foundation for the guest-focused experience the Vancouver Christmas Market is known for today.

Malte’s dedication to authenticity is reflected in every detail – from handcrafted goods to traditional food and festive decor. His vision has always been supported by a passionate team:
