The German-Canadian Business Association was proud to host a community event together with Alberta Chapter Founding Member Lufthansa Technik Canada at their interim engine maintenance facility in Calgary, offering attendees a unique behind-the-scenes look into one of the world’s leading aviation maintenance organizations and its growing investment in Canada.

To create a more personalized and interactive experience, participants joined one of two smaller guided tours throughout the day, allowing attendees to engage directly with Lufthansa Technik experts, ask detailed questions, and experience the engines and maintenance operations up close. Guests later came together at Big Rock Brewery for networking, dinner, and conversations with members of the GCBA and the broader local business community.

During the tours, attendees gained fascinating insights into the global aviation industry and the highly interconnected nature of international aviation operations. Lufthansa Technik Canada shared how they successfully grew their Calgary team to approximately 80 employees within their first year of operations while servicing the LEAP-1B engine – the engine that powers the Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Participants also learned that these next-generation engines are approximately 30% more fuel efficient than the generation they replace and will play an important role in the modernization of the WestJet fleet in the years ahead.

The event also highlighted Lufthansa Technik’s significant contribution to expanding Canadian aviation and maintenance capacity. The Calgary operation will complement and integrate with Lufthansa Technik’s existing Canadian presence in Montreal, further strengthening Canada’s position within the global aerospace and aviation ecosystem.

Attendees were introduced to Lufthansa Technik’s future permanent facility plans at Calgary International Airport, which is currently under development and will expand operational capacity from eight to 25 service bays to support growing demand in the North American market. The expansion represents a major long-term investment in Alberta and Canada’s aerospace sector and further reinforces Calgary’s growing importance as a hub for aviation maintenance and technical expertise.

The discussion also highlighted Lufthansa Technik Canada’s commitment to workforce development and education. Through partnerships with institutions such as British Columbia Institute of Technology and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, the company supports the next generation of engine mechanics, including sponsorship opportunities for students requiring financial support for education and tooling.

From logistics and safety systems to engineering redundancies and aircraft engine performance, the event provided guests with a rare opportunity to better understand the technologies and skilled professionals that make global mobility and transatlantic business connections possible every day.

As a founding member of the Alberta chapter of the German-Canadian Business Association, Lufthansa Technik Canada continues to demonstrate how German global industry leaders are investing in Canada, creating highly skilled jobs, strengthening local expertise, and building long-term capacity in strategically important sectors.
