GCBA Speaker Event Recap:
Canada and Europe Amid Global Tensions
On June 19th, the German Canadian Business Association (GCBA), in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Canada (KAS), hosted a high-profile speaker and panel evening at the downtown Vancouver offices of Kasian Architecture.
Bringing together members, experts, and special guests, the event provided a timely and thought-provoking forum under the theme:
“New Realities, Old Ties: Canada and Europe in an Era of Global Tensions.”
This topic could not be more timely. As global security alliances shift and long-held partnerships are questioned, both Canada and Europe face new strategic challenges. As a result, the discussion addressed concerns over transatlantic cooperation, geopolitical uncertainty, and the resilience of democracy.
Opening and Welcome
GCBA Vice President Alexander Jecht, opened the evening by welcoming attendees and setting the tone for the discussion ahead.
He offered a warm acknowledgment of Mr. Marc Eichhorn, Consul General of Germany in Vancouver, and expressed sincere thanks to all guests, speakers, and partners for their presence and contributions. His remarks emphasized the importance of transatlantic dialogue and created an atmosphere of openness and respect that carried throughout the evening.
Keynote and Panel Highlights
The evening began with a keynote by Alexandra Richards, PhD Candidate in Political Science at Simon Fraser University. Her presentation, titled “Democracies at Stake, Under Pressure—What’s at Risk for Transatlantic Partners?” offered a sharp and focused introduction to the evening’s topic.
After the keynote, the panel featured three experts in international affairs.
- Dr. Bernd Althusmann, Head of KAS Canada and a former senior politician from Germany, travelled from Ottawa to participate.
- Vina Nadjibulla, Vice President of Research & Strategy at the Asia Pacific Foundation and Adjunct Professor at UBC, brought expertise in global security.
- Luthfi Dhofier, President of the Canadian International Council and Board Member of the Canada-Indonesia Chamber of Commerce, shared key perspectives on Canada’s role in foreign policy.
Moderated Discussion and Audience Involvement
GCBA member Franziska Schwarzmann, a communications and marketing professional, moderated the panel. She played a major role in shaping the evening’s flow and structure. In addition, Franziska’s “hot chair” format invited members of the audience to pose direct questions, which kept the atmosphere lively and interactive.
The discussion covered a wide range of topics. These included shifts in global cooperation, the importance of democratic stability, and growing pressure on long-standing alliances. Franziska ensured all panelists had the chance to contribute equally while maintaining a smooth, engaging pace.
Kasian Architecture as the Perfect Venue
The venue was generously provided by GCBA members Martin Nogger and Christine Weber. Their support, along with a guided tour through Kasian’s workspace, helped set the tone for an open and creative evening.
Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the office offered stunning views and a modern, open design. It encouraged conversation and created a welcoming atmosphere where attendees could relax and focus on the evening’s message.
Networking and Closing Reception
After the formal program, guests gathered in the lounge for an informal networking session. Many stayed to reconnect, continue conversations, and enjoy the setting.
Drinks were served, and a beautifully prepared sushi buffet—thoughtfully arranged by GCBA President Andrea Basche—rounded off the evening. As the sun set behind Vancouver’s skyline, the event wrapped up in a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
Event Photos and Final Thanks
